People will give different answers to the question: "What is the most valuable thing in the world?". Among other things (like health, love, family) I would specially point to knowledge. When you have knowledge, almost every door is open to you (unless it is boarded by the government restrictions). May be you cannot get love or family only with knowledge but everything else - certainly.
By "knowledge" I mean not only knowing random facts but also an ability to put necessary parts together, analyze things and make deductions. This all comes to manging knowledge, to being smart.
There are several ways to improve our brains. I am not talking about misterious military brain simulators but about simple ways that everyone can use.
One thing that anyone can do is to exercize his mind as much as possible. Learning languages, solving puzzles, reading books that require you to think - all worth, all works. It is like any machine: stop using it and it will be covered in rust. But if you use it, it will work. The more you use, the more you care - the better it will work.
The other thing to do is to organize and plan your life. Do not live as a leaf in the mountain river. Think what you want to achive in a month, half a year, year, ten years, etc. Make a plan how to do it and follow this plan. No problem if plan is not fulfilling very well - you can always adjust time. You have plenty of it if you do not spend it for nothing.
Yet another thing is to keep emotions under control. This keeps brain cold and allows better thinking. Emotions often do not let to take good decisions. I sometimes hit this wall too.
Finally, there are several web sites focused on improving human's life and using brain effectively. I would like to point to:
This list will be updated if I find more sites.

nice topic. At least one I'm thinking about quite often.
Right now I'm reading a book, written by David Allen: "Getting things done".
Really interesting and nice approaches easy to learn and implement in your daily life.

but what is knowledge without emotion?
1) Won't this be dangerous? Doing bad things just because of science?
2) Knowledge is important in every life but which life do you get without emotion? Will you become one of this nerds who have only got their science but nothing else in their lifes. Maybe this works for them but it won't work for me. I do need this kind of balance and a place to get some energy back - the so-called boring life with wife, kids, house & dog
